Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP)at RRF With The Elderly In North Bukusu Location

Ageing is not about slowing down but about living fully and in community. That belief drives our annual celebration of the International Day of Older Persons. At Rainbow Room Foundation, we gather on this day to honor our elders with joy, care and connection.

On October 1st, 2025, the Rainbow Room Foundation (RRF) complex was filled with joy and music as we came together to mark the International Day of Older Persons under this year’s global theme: “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-being, Our Rights.”

Grooming & Breakfast: A Joyful Start: To begin with, our elderly guests arrived at the complex and enjoyed a special grooming session. Haircuts, hair dyeing, small manicures and blow-dries brought out smiles and boosted confidence. A reminder that ageing comes with dignity, care and self-love. Afterwards, they gathered for a hearty breakfast while the sweet sounds of zilizopendwa and Bukusu classics played in the background. Conversations and laughter filled the air and the stage was set for a day to remember.

Music and Dancing: Music carried the day as Wabwile wa Barasa and his live band entertained the wazee with soulful Luhya tunes. The atmosphere was electric as our guests danced and even enjoyed a round of the classic twisti Tukafukuza uzee kidogo! A true reminder that joy knows no age.

The Art of Healthy Living: After the dancing, the day shifted towards learning. It also focused on learning how to live healthier and longer. Dr. Hendrica Anyango from Nalondo Model Hospital delivered an engaging session on nutrition, highlighting how the right food choices can help manage lifestyle diseases. Moreover, the interactive session allowed the wazee to ask their own health questions and receive direct advice. Many appreciated this chance to learn and share openly.

Moments of Pure Fun: Laughter soon filled the grounds again as the wazee took part in fun and competitive games. They played puzzles with the RRF staff and invited guests. Inflated balloons, ran a potato race and played the all-time favorite musical chairs. The energy was contagious. In the end, the winners received prizes and everyone carried home smiles and fond memories.

Closing with Care and Connection: Finally, as the day drew to a close, we all came together for a shared meal, marking the perfect end to a celebration that was equal parts meaningful and heartwarming. A special thank you goes to our elderly guest stars, who remain the soul of this occasion. Their energy and presence remind us why celebrating them is important.

At RRF, we believe that ageing is not about slowing down. It’s about embracing joy and community. This year’s International Day of Older Persons showed how love, care and togetherness can keep the spirit alive across generations. Here’s to our wazee, our everyday heroes, our teachers and the heart of our community.
