A HEARTWARMING 2023 FAREWELL FOR THE ELDERLY IN MUKHWEYA, BUNGOMA

As the sun set’s closer to end year 2023, the quaint retirement community of Mukhweya, Bungoma, buzzes full of excitement. The day is ablaze with joy and cheer as members of the Elderly Programme gather at RRF grounds to bid farewell to 2023. This annual event by Rainbow Room Foundation (RRF) is not just any party; it’s testament to our commitment to enriching the lives of our people in Kabuchai Division.

As a matter of fact, the day commences with registration on entry, personal grooming – nail cutting, a visit to the barber’s stand, hair wash and blow dry for the women then breakfast before settling down for festivities.

Catherine Anyona, the Programme Manager at RRF, reflects on the achievements made during the year, highlighting the impact of the programme on the elderly minority.

“We have had a good year with the elders,” she states in her address.

“We have seen them receive nutritional talks, celebrated World Elderly Day together and how many here were fitted with hearing aids? Can you hear me?.” She further quips in reference to the events we’ve had throughout the year.

The emphasis on holistic well-being is evident as Bibiana Khaemba, a nutritionist in Bungoma County, shares insights on how maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle during one’s golden years.

“Exercises like walking and helping with household chores are advisable to keep active,” Bibiana advises the gathering.  She adds.

“Personal hygiene, including showering, cutting nails, and oral hygiene, is also important.”

One of the highlights of the day is the friendly competition amongst the 20 villages.

The 2023 winners, Evelyne Juma from Mukhweya B and Irene Walubengo from Sinoko in the musical chairs category and Soda straw challenge respectively, proudly represent their villages and add an extra layer of joy to the festivities.

As the year concludes, today’s air is full of accomplishment and gratitude much like a mirror of how the year went about for the wazee. Throughout the year, the RRF elders reaped the rewards of socially connecting with peers and gained valuable knowledge to enhance their general well-being for the future. Catherine Anyona shares a heartfelt message, “Indeed, it has been a good year for the RRF community, especially the elders, as they have benefited immensely not only socially but also with knowledge.”

The commitment of the Rainbow Room Foundation to have a positive impact on lives remains intact. RRF does not just create memories but also sows the seeds for a brighter future for the community we call home, ensuring that no one is left behind as they journey through life.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2024 to our senior citizens!
