In the picturesque heart of Kabuchai, a literary revolution unfolds. Seven schools enlisted to participate in the much-hyped July 12 #ReadAloud Challenge, an initiative to foster reading among school-going children and teachers. Nurturing reading ambassadors by Start a Library Trust.
The event is after transforming schools into a vibrant hub for storytelling, learning, and creativity, bringing together students, teachers, parents, and local leaders in an inspiring celebration of literacy. It is so ground-breaking that the President of the Republic declared the event a special occasion.
This year participant schools included Mukhweya RC Primary School, Pongola FYM, Nalondo CBM, Namilama DEB, Walukaya DEB, Namakhele RC, and Nalondo DEB.

The students, guided by teachers, were tasked to read an excerpt from Kijiji Cha Ukame by Hamisa Babusa. As a precursor to the day, the students practised reading aloud to find clarity, expression, and confidence, honing their skills and gaining a deeper appreciation for the power of reading. The text is about a greedy leader known as Mzee Zuzu who disregards the people and goes about to destroy the village. Ultimately, the town turned into a desert after the destruction of the environment.
The event began with a warm welcome from Mr. Godfrey Katiana, a teacher at Nalondo CBM. Mr. Katiana remarks highlighted the significance of the day and thanked the Rainbow Room Foundation for the #ReadAloud Challenge for promoting literacy in the location. He emphasized that reading aloud is not only a skill but a gateway to enhance imagination and knowledge. “When we read aloud,” he said, “we bring stories to life, and in doing so, we inspire others to dream, to learn, and grow.” The teacher, Godfrey Katiana, said before asking the students questions to gauge their understanding of the text.
After living to the hype, the 2025 Read Aloud challenge is worth anticipating.
